Het NILG is een samenwerkingsverband dat zich ten doel stelt onderzoek op het terrein van law and governance te bevorderen. Het staat open voor samenwerking met universiteiten en onderzoeksinstellingen. De huidige partners van het NILG zijn het Groningen Centre for Law and Governance, het Kooijmans Instituut for Law and Governance, de Law and Governance Group van Wageningen University and de leerstoelgroep Law, Governance & Technology van de Universiteit Twente. Het onderzoeksthema van het NILG is de interactie tussen publieke en private belangen en publieke en private actoren bij de governance, regulering en juridische behandeling van sociale, politieke en economische relaties.
